Twitter is now retiring their 1.0 API, and it is taking more control of how their content is being displayed in websites and CMS like elgg. Some changes have been done to elgg, and in this article I will describe the changes and alternatives for this API Change made by Twitter.
Twitter Connect lets people use their Twitter information to log into your elgg network. In order to keep that feature working in elgg, you must upgrade to the latest elgg version, 1.8.15, which is available via Softaculous. If you want to upgrade, but do not know how to perform an elgg version upgrade, please read this article.
Alternative, you could remove the ‘Twitter Plugin’ and ‘Twitter API’ plugin from your current elgg 1.8 installation, download from the elgg website the latest version of elgg, and grab the upgraded version of the ‘Twitter API’ plugin. Although it is not recommended, it is an alternative way to still get Twitter support in elgg, if you do not want to upgrade at the moment. We do still recommend upgrading, since besides the Twitter API upgrade, there have been some security enhancements and bug removal.
