How to make links open in new windows in prosilver on phpBB forums

Generally, forum owners want to keep their visitors on their forum and when possible, remove anything which might turn visitors away. One limitation within PHPBB is when a user posts an external link, they generally open up in the same tab taking the visitor off of your website.

In this article, I am going to show you how you can change your template to make all external links open up in a new tab/window and in doing so, when a visitor clicks on a link they will still be on your forum.

Using your favorite file explorer/FTP client open the your forums directory (where your forum is installed in). You are going to navigate to the following link:

Open this file and look for the following portion:

<a href=”{forumrow.U_VIEWFORUM}” class=”forumtitle”>{forumrow.FORUM_NAME}</a><br />

It looks like this and is on line 33:

You are going to replace this with the following code:

<!-- SHM Force Link forum links to open in new window/tab -->
<a href="{forumrow.U_VIEWFORUM}" class="forumtitle" <!-- IF forumrow.S_IS_LINK -->target="_blank"<!-- ENDIF -->>{forumrow.FORUM_NAME}</a><br />

It will look like this when you are done:

Once you do this save re-upload (if prompted, overwrite the old file). Make sure that you refresh your template in order to make sure it’s testable. Now in order to test this click on a link to see if it worked if it did you should see this:

There ya have it! All done!
