How to Manage MySQL Databases Remotely

It is possible to manage MySQL databases using PHPMyAdmin but it has limitations. You will not be able to execute huge databases since it will cause timeouts. Hence, it is advisable to make use of remote MySQL client software such as SQLyog.

With the help of SQLyog, you will be able to execute and manage MySQL databases from within your computer.

For Linux hosting, you should first add your IP address by following the steps below

(1) Login to CPanel

(2) Select Remote MySQL under Databases section

(3) Add your IP address and click Add Host button

If you don’t know the IP address you can find it out by visiting What Is My IP Address

It is advisable to enter your IP address in the following format

11.11.%.% or 11.%.%.%

The above mentioned steps are not applicable if you host your site under Windows server using WebsitePanel.

(1) Download SQLyog. A free 30 day trial version is available which is sufficient for initial usage.

(2) By default, you will view Connect to MySQL Host dialog as shown below. You can also select File | New Connection

As you can see above, you need to provide database name, username and password along with MySQL Host address which can either be a fully qualified name or IP address. You need to refer to the hosting account information e-mail which you got at the time of signing up.

If the credentials are correct then you will be connected to the remote server and a dialog with the progress bar will be displayed on the screen as shown below

Tools such as SQLYog can be used for managing huge MySQL databases since the usage of PHPMyAdmin will result in connection timeouts.
