In this article I will cover two very important topics concerning elgg version upgrades and elgg server transfers.
Elgg Version Upgrades
Before upgrading, make sure you make a database and site backup with Softaculous. If you installed elgg manually, you need to do the backup with cPanel. This is the most important step, because if the upgrade goes wrong or a plugin doesn’t work after upgrading, you can always restore your site safely.
Also, make sure you disable third party plugins before performing the version upgrade. This will ensure a smooth upgrade.
Elgg Server Transfers
If you want to transfer your elgg network with us, or want to switch to a dedicated server, the first thing you have to do is create a full website backup and a full database backup as well. We do transfer in a secure and reliable manner, however you must always do that first just in case something happens.
Do not forget that you also have to make a backup of the elgg data folder, because that’s the most important folder of your site.
Note: After you do a version upgrade or a transfer you must run the upgrade.php script. If you don’t know how to do it, read this article.
