What is ownCloud?

“ownCloud gives you universal access to your files through a web interface or WebDAV. It also provides a platform to easily view & sync your contacts, calendars and bookmarks across all your devices and enables basic editing right on the web. Installation has minimal server requirements, doesn’t need special permissions and is quick. ownCloud is extendable via a simple but powerful API for applications and plugins.”

Simply put, is a free and open-source web application for data synchronization, file sharing, and cloud storage.

Getting Started

To setup ownCloud on your Arvixe website, you may either install it manually, install it through softaculous, or have it autoloaded when you sign up! Now, once you have ownCloud setup, the login page will look like this:


Use the username admin and the password you used on setup to log into your ownCloud!

Personal Settings

The first thing we will cover is your personal settings. To reach these, open the drop down menu in the upper right hand corner, and click on Personal


On this page, you can see how many gigabytes you have used/have remaining, change your password and your display name, enter an email address for password recovery, select the language, and export/import user accounts


Configuring ownCloud

To configure ownCloud, open the drop down menu in the upper right hand corner, and click on Admin


On this page, you can set a ZIP-download limit, export your ownCloud settings, setup a Cron, edit your sharing options, and enforce HTTPS security.


Adding Files

Adding files to ownCloud is a breeze! From the Files tab, simply click on the Up Arrow


Open the file you want uploaded, and it will be added to ownCloud! It’s that easy!


Adding Users

Adding users will allow others access to your ownCloud service. You can even group users together so that they may share with each other!

To add users, open the drop down menu in the upper right hand corner, and click on Users


Simply create a username and password for the user. Select/create a group for them, and select their storage limit. Click Create, and they are all set!


Using Apps

There are several apps for ownCloud that can help you customize your experience! To use apps, open the drop down menu in the upper right hand corner, and click on Apps


From here, you can click on any app to enable or disable it!

You can even add your own apps!


ownCloud Desktop, Android, and iPhone App

To make using ownCloud easier, you can install apps to run on your desktop or your smartphone, so you always have access to your files!

To do this, simply open the drop down menu in the upper right hand corner, and click on Personal again


From here, just select whether you want the Desktop, Android, or iPhone app!


You will now have access to your files from anywhere!

    HI , I have an arriver account and a domain. I have recently updated to OS Marverick on my macbook and this is causing problems due to the fact that I have a lot of emails (almost 100.000 now.) I want to start fresh in 2014 with a new desktop mail client, and mail app in iphone (later I would like to change to android phone). To be honest I do not use my arvixe mail box a lot, but would like to receive and send mails from my portable phone with my own arvixe email extension, which Iphone does not do. (only for a little while and then it cannot sent anymore, so I am obliged to sent mails from my Iphone with my
    I have a small “one man show” business, so I like to have security, little spam and as few as possible junk mail. I though going to mozilla and thunderbird , but they do not have a Iphone app. Now I read about your own cloud and maybe I can work towards that in steps. Can you advise and help ?

    I get this error:

    Magic Quotes is enabled. ownCloud requires that it is disabled to work properly.
    Magic Quotes is a deprecated and mostly useless setting that should be disabled. Please ask your server administrator to disable it in php.ini or in your webserver config.

    Is it normal that there is no way for users to sign up ? There is a way to activate this option ?

      I am not sure what you’re referring to here. We previously offered a free demo account though this is no longer the case.
