mojoPortal Tips: Managing Content Workflow, Part I
Last Updated on Sunday, 27 November 2011 01:50 Written by Carole Bennett Sunday, 27 November 2011 12:00
In any organization consisting of more than one person, there is a natural tendency to delegate based on available time, energy and talent for any given task. In this day and age, content creation tends to be quite high on that list. Fresh content in your website ensures better SEO optimization, and gives your customers a reason to come back to your site more frequently.
However, there is a caveat to this; is it *good* content? Is it well-written, easy to read? Spelling, grammar, punctuation? Yes, even in this 140-character age, all those factors are critical in communication of your branding value. Example: your sales manager may be a brilliant verbal communicator, and an absolute genius in creating content that will draw in potential buyers – but she can’t spell her way out of a paper bag. Or perhaps he has only a passing familiarity with proper grammar and punctuation.
Well, that’s what your admin staff is for, right? That’s where we get into workflow, and touching on how to get content from the generator, to the editor, and to the web for your site visitors to read.

There’s been some really terrific developments in the world of mojoPortal this past month; here’s a rundown on the latest.
1) Form Wizard Pro 2.6.0.4 was released this month; the biggest update is the ability to use aliases for question values and questions. This allows for improved data optimization when capturing responses via form to be imported into databases from .csv or .xls outputs, while maintaining readability.
Example: Location IDs may be a GUID string in the database, but location customers will be more likely to understand “123 Main St.” than “8f40a6e6-bd34-497b-94ee-6317ae273947″ – you can see how being able to use a “human-friendly” label for the response option will ensure higher form completion levels.
mojoPortal users taking advantage of Form Wizard Pro for the first time will appreciate i7media’s article on Form Wizard Pro templates. Accompanying the article are two sample forms to get you started, along with step-by-step explanations on how to import the sample forms.
October was the first month for IndigoTea’s Free mojoPortal Skin of the Month; in honor of the Halloween holiday, an extra Halloween-themed skin was also made available. The IndigoTea site, as well as the client site Appraising In Delaware, were also featured on the mojoPortal.com site.
Shaun Geisert has come up with a nifty time-saver for automating mojoPortal upgrades using Windows Powershell; you can find step-by-step instructions on the Colorado State University site.
One of the most interesting developments for mojoPortal this month has been on the Windows Web App Gallery; mojoPortal is not only one of the featured application downloads, but also the highest-rated application.

I surprised myself by becoming quite a fan of WebMatrix, so I was keen to give the new WebMatrix2 beta a go and see how it shapes up.
I’ve found WebMatrix very easy to use and surprisingly robust. It gave me a very easy way to install and run my CMS websites locally and then to publish them, and also to resync my local environment to the published one. In particular note it allows publishing of an SQL database with just a tick of a box (once the connection string has been entered).

One of the things my customers tell me is useful is my adding a support page to their website so they can easily log any problems or questions they have with me. I create a page that is not visible to visitors of the website, it is only visible to the website administrator(s). The page has a form that will automatically send me an email, without them even having to remember my email address. WithMojoPortal this is really easy to do.
