Set the target version of the .Net Framework

Since 2008, Visual Studio comes with a Multi Target support. In this article I will give you a step-by-step guide on how to change the target version of the .Net Framework of your new ASP projects.Overview

What does “multi-target” mean? How it benefits me as a developer? Old versions of Microsoft Visual Studio supported a very specific version of .NET Framework.  For instance, if you had a .Net 2.0 ASP project and you had Visual Studio 2003 on your machine, you could not work on it. You had to install the Visual Studio that supported the .Net 2.0 framework. In other words, if you were to have several projects with different .Net versions, you had to keep each version of Microsoft Visual Studio on your computer. Multi Target Support introduced back in 2008 was a good move in the right direction, because it allows developer to work without having to upgrade their existing projects and applications to use a new version of the .Net framework.

Getting Started

1. Open Visual Studio

2. Go to menu “File -> New Project“:

3. In the “New Project” dialog box, at the top and almost at the center, you can clearly see the .Net version selected by default (That’s the .net target version) change it according to your needs:

target framework asp arvixe hosting

4. And that’s it! You just set the target version of your new asp project!

This concludes Set the target version of the .Net Framework
