nopCommerce has a very robust and extensive administration panel, but every now and again, you’ll find that data needs to be updated or corrected in a way that’s not supported by nopCommerce directly. It’s at those times that you may find it preferable to edit the database directly – today, we’ll talk about how to do just that.
We’ll start with the prerequisite that you’re leveraging MSSQL for your database, and that you have SQL Server Management Studio installed on your computer. If you don’t already have it installed, you can go here http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/sqlserver/get-sql-server/try-it.aspx and download either a trial version, or the free Express version.
Once you’ve got all that set up, refer to your live server setup. For instance, if you’re using Arvixe hosting, you’ll log in via WebsitePanel, and navigate to your “Databases” tab. From here, we’ll want to retrieve your database access information; your SQL user name, and SQL database password.
You’ll want to check with your hosting provider to find out whether to access your live SQL database by IP address or URL. Once you’ve got that information, open up your SQL Server Management Studio. You’ll see a modal that contains information fields to let you connect to your database.
In the field labeled “server name”, enter your IP address or URL; in the login and password fields, enter the information you got from your WebsitePanel. Select “Remember password”, and click “Connect”. Allow a moment for the connection between your desktop and the server; you should then see the server and all databases on it, and be able to access your nopCommerce database to edit or update any information, as needed.
