nopCommerce Tips: Customizing Your Automated Messages

nopCommerce comes with an extensive array of automated message templates for notifications generated by your nopCommerce store (order confirmations, shipping confirmations, information requests), but because they’re “out of the box”, they may lack some personality. In addition, you can insert content into these templates to promote special offers – let’s take a look at how that’s done.
Log into your nopCommerce site as an admin, and navigate to the administration section of the site. Go to “Content Management”> “Message Templates”. Wow – that’s a pretty impressive list of templates, isn’t it? It’s OK – we’ll start with a simple one that’s easier to recognize: “OrderPlaced.CustomerNotification”. Click on the “Edit” link next to it.
Don’t worry about that huge clump of text at the top; that’s just a collection of variables that you can use in your own template layout. You can tell each variable, because it starts and ends with a percent (“%” ) sign. We’ll stick with the ones already in the template for now.
As you can see, it’s pretty straightforward, which is fine. However, you might want to add content like “Thanks for doing business with us. We know you can shop anywhere, so we appreciate the fact that you chose us.”
You could also add a “Thanks for doing business with us; in appreciation for your purchase, here’s a 10% discount on your next purchase”, with a discount code you’ve generated under “Promotions”>”Discounts”. It’s a way of encouraging repeat business, which improves your bottom line – an existing customer is less expensive to keep than it is to acquire new customers.
Once you’ve finished your customization, click “Save” – now your template will reflect your business brand and personality, and become a more valuable tool in creating your relationships with your customers.
