Jquery and SEO Implications

Using Jquery, JavaScript, and other scripting languages seems like a natural choice when developing a web site — or is it? If you are like me than you have read all about the benefits of using such scripting languages when developing a site. There is the quick loading, minimal bandwidth, and more “natural” interaction. These are all great reasons to consider using scripting language but there is a dark side. This dark side is a result of what I will call the “spider effect”. The spider effect is that most site crawlers or search engine sites do not do a good job when it comes to “interpreting” scripting languages. In fact, some of them actually leave out the entire script. Let me show you an example:

You can use a multitude of “spider simulator tools” available on line. They include;
Spider Simulator Tool
Feed the bot
Metamend

I have taken one of my sites) which uses jquery to make AJAX calls along with other “enhancements” like animation, sliders, etc.

Here is the result:
greenwood christian academy williamsburg va style sheets that hold the individual page styles williamsburg crossing 5251 37 john tyler hwy williamsburg va 23185 757 345 0905 office 757 645 4587 fax directions contact us home welcome teachers teachers board members enrollment classes contact about resources alert greenwood christian academy is opening 2 hours late on january 24 2013 announcement greenwood christian academy’s open house february 24 2013 1 00pm 3 00pm greenwood christian school is dedicated to promoting both integrity and learning through excellence our school has been around for more than 50 years and educating over 5 000 children we have grown in numbers and in awards and accomplishments we currently offer classes from pre-kindergarten through 5th grade we encourage you to look at our private academy by using this site or better yet contact us directly for a personal tour of our campus you will find everything from computer labs to full size gymnasium ask us about special discounts for the fall registration celebrating 50 years of excellence in williamsburg va school links school lunch form 2013 2014 school lunch form elementary handbook review dress code preschool handbook preschool handbook registration form registration form school events complete school calendar announcements quick info discount card info gca is in the process of developing the 2nd annual discount card program for the start of the school year if you have a business that would like to participate contact our director of development on our contact page copyright c 2012 greenwood christian academy all rights reserved welcome contact us enrollment.

If you were to look at the jquery ajax call you will find that the above text items are missing the event calendar information as well as anything that was “loaded” via javascript or jquery.

When building a web site you cannot just focus on the user experience. Until the spiders become people, developers will be forced to deal with them just like in Arachnophobia.

I live in the historical triangle of Virginia where I am married with two daughters. I have spent over 13 years working for a Fortune 500 company in the computer area. I started in VB 6.0 and by the time I ended my employment I was supervising a development team where we built many web applications. When my first daughter was born I wanted to spend more time with her so I left and became a programmer analyst for local government as well as launch my own company. Since then I have grown James River Webs into a profitable web design and application company helping small businesses create a big presence on the internet. As an employee I have created web application used by citizens and other companies. I enjoy fly fishing, and spending time with my family. I also enjoy learning new approaches and development tools when it comes to developing applications.
