How to Install a Tool to Stop Bot Spammers in Elgg

In this article I will show you how to install a tool to stop bot spammers to protect your site and the integrity of our servers.

There has been a lot of discussion in the elgg community forums about a way to stop bot spammers. Spam is a well know issue among Elgg users, and it is a big problem in our servers. Bot spammers take bandwidth, and reduce loading speed of your elgg site because usually those spammers flood it with thousand of spams.

The tool that we are going to use is called Math Captcha. What it does is ask users a math question before signing up to your elgg site. You can download it from here. It is free and it is compatible with the latest version of Elgg.

Once downloaded unzip the plugin. Then with an FTP Manager, connect to your site and follow this steps:

1) Upload the the plugin’s main folder to the mod folder of your Elgg installation:

2) Log in to your Elgg site as an Admin

3) Go to the Administration page. On the left menu, click on Tool Administration. Once there, find the plugin just uploaded and click on the button that says enable:

4) After that, you will get a message that your plugin was enabled successfully. Now, on the registration page, a field will be added in which a new user has to answer a simple math question in the registration page:

We encourage you to install this anti spammer tool or  take  other measures to stop spammers in your Elgg site. Lately, spam has been increasing, and this could make your elgg site slow, because of the amount of useless data that spammers post on your site, and it affects our servers too.
