How to Increase Character Limit of The Wire in Elgg 1.8

Previously, I wrote a post about how to increase the character limit on the wire. However, due to huge changes in the new version of Elgg just released this week, I will write a new article about increasing the character limit of the plugin called The Wire for Elgg 1.8. Sign into your website with a FTP manager and follow these steps:

1. Once inside your site, go to mod/thewire/views/default/js and open the file thewire.php and look for lines 14 to 17:

2. We are going to change the value of ‘140’ to the amount of characters that we want to allow. For example, we will set this up to 400:

3. Save the changes and close that file. Now, go to mod/thewire/views/default/forms/thewire/ and open the file add.php and look for <div id=”thewire-characters-remaining”>:

4. We will change the ‘140’ to ‘400’ here too:

5. Save those changes and close that file. Now, go to mod/thewire/views/default/thewire/forms and open the file add.php We are going to change default character limit here. Look for all ‘140’ inside this file. Such value is located in lines 30 and 31:

6. Change the default value of ‘140’ with the desired amount of characters that you want to allow for the wire. In this example we will replace it for ‘400’:

7. Save your changes and close that file. Now, go back to your site and run upgrade.php And that’s it!

This now concludes how to increase character limit of The Wire in Elgg 1.8

  1. There is a small error here, when it’s in the activities, they wont display the full posted text.

  2. In the line 247 look for:

    // only 200 characters allowed
    $text = elgg_substr($text, 0, 200);

    change to:

    // only 200 characters allowed
    $text = elgg_substr($text, 0, 400);

    And it’ll work.

    Please add this to the article as soon as possible, I can asure you there are many ppl confused right now, asking themselved what they missed. Thx, it helped me a lot.

  3. Please delete the previous comment, it lacked a part of the text.

    Open mod/thewire/start.php

    In the line 247 look for:

    // only 200 characters allowed
    $text = elgg_substr($text, 0, 200);

    change to:

    // only 400 characters allowed (Yeah, change the comment too, so you can remember it later, just in case you want to change it again)
    $text = elgg_substr($text, 0, 400);

    And it’ll work.

    Please add this to the article as soon as possible, I can asure you there are many ppl confused right now, asking themselved what they missed. Thx, it helped me a lot.
