It seems this would create a subdomain folder into /public_html/ which is the main site. Is this correct? Meaning if I went to http:mysite.com/subdomain it would be listed there.

What if i need my subdomain to exist outside of the main root site like a true subdomain. How would that be set up?

You should be able to specify it in the same screen.
