After months of development and RC releases, Elgg 2.0 is finally out! What do you need to do to get it? What is new? In this article I will discuss everything about Elgg 2.0.
There have been significant performance improvements. The most important one is allowing the majority of static resources to be served without the overhead of PHP. Besides that, JQuery has been upgraded to 2.1.4, which fixes a rare bug in iOS 8.2 and 8.3. Also, the plugin management page has been improved and cleaned up.
There are several bugs that have been addressed in this release. One of them is update the “like” count of a post. Also, empty discussion notification mail bug has been fixed, now fully showing the content of the discussion reply.
The discussion tool has been upgraded to its own plugin. Remember the “Discussion” section in the groups plugin? It wasn’t a plugin, and it wasn’t easy to extend it or display it on your own plugin.
Also, a userpicker has been added to the Messages plugin, so that you can easily send private messages to your contacts. Besides that, you can sort alphabetically groups and members.
PHP 5.4 is no longer supported. Elgg 2.0 requires PHP 5.5 and there is no way to bypass this requirement. For Arvixe users that will never be a problem. This is a good thing, because PHP 5.4 has reached its end of life and it no longer receives security fixes. It was an excellent move from the Core Elgg Developers, since PHP 5.5 brings speed performance and a new password hashing API
This concludes Elgg 2.0 is out!!!
