Backing Up and Restoring the Dolphin 7 Database

In today’s blog I’m going to show you how to backup and restore your Dolphin 7 database. Backing up your database is a very important step you should never forget if you’re about to install a new mod or edit anything in the database. Having a recent backup can turn fixing a database error from an all day job into a 5 minute job.
We’ll start by logging into our Dolphin admin area and clicking “Database Backup” under the “Tools” tab. Next click “Database Backup Tools” under the “Database Tools” block. You can also backup individual tables but in my opinion it’s better to back up the entire database. Make sure the drop down menu is set to “Backup structure and content” and then select the “Save to your PC” option. This will save a copy of your database locally to your computer. This way you will have it even if a catastrophe happens on the server side.
Next click “Backup Database”, then click “Save” and choose a location on your PC to store the back up.
That’s all there is to it. You now have a full copy of your Dolphin 7 database on your home PC.
Now I’ll walk you through the steps to restore that database if the need arises. From that same section of the admin area click “Browse” under the “Database restore from your PC” sub-heading. Select the location and file you choose when doing the backup procedure. Now click “Send” and the database you backed up earlier will be restored. You will now be at the point you were before the backup and presumably before the mishap that caused the need to restore the database.
Remember these procedures ONLY cover the database portion of your site. If you are going to edit the actual files you need to back those up before the changes also. This can be accomplished using a good FTP program which no webmaster should be without.
That’s it for this installment, thanks for reading and happy social networking!
