Alfresco Fine Grain Permission Model

Alfresco has a powerful permission system which enables administrators to grant permissions to specific users for specific content. In this article I will go through the permissions system.

Permission model is implemented in following way

Base Permissions

Starting point for permission tree is base permissions which are very basic permissions for instance read document or write on document or noderef, these are directly identifiable by alfresco DAO classes and you can consider it as basic granules of Permission model.

Ex. _ReadPermissions, _WriteContent , _ReadChildren etc…

Simple Permission Groups

The above base permissions are grouped into simple permission groups, which themselves can be grouped into more complex groups (see cm:object)

Simple groups are normally used to control the access to methods on public services. This is clear as they translate by convention to a single permission.

Few examples of available groups are as follow

ReadProperties, ReadChildren, FullControl, ChangePermissions, DeleteAssociations etc…

Complex Groups

Then above Simple groups are combine into Complex groups

Ex. Read, Write, Delete, AddChildren

Complex Permission Groups

Then there are complex permission groups which include multiple complex groups and then those are used to assign to particular user of group from user interface.

Ex. Collaborator, Contributor, Editor etc…

To get idea about existing permissions and all groups in Alfresco refer permissionDefinitions.xml from your Alfresco installation..

I love opensource technologies working with those technologies from the time I have stepped in to the Software Industry. Alfresco CMS is my area of expertise. I have worked on various complex implementations which involved integration of Alfresco with other technologies, extensively worked with JBPM workflows and Webscripts.
