In Alfresco 5.0.d version I came across an interesting new feature of which, I thought it would be worth sharing with you. Let me show you first the picture of that.

Looks cool right? This is new developers view which you can enable through debug menu which is recently added in Alfresco share to help developers in debugging share widgets. Here we are going to discuss first that debug menu through we can enable above view and then in next post we will discuss on the developers view.

As you know javascript gives us the advantage of dynamic loading and saving the development time but at the same it has few limitations when it comes to debugging the code.So, this feature will give developers great advantage and they will be able to see all related logs in “WebConsol”.

First thing required to use this menu is to change alfresco into debug mode and restart it. There is a following config entry which you need to add in your

   <!-- Global config section -->
   <config replace="true">
            Developer debugging setting to turn on DEBUG mode for client scripts in the browser

            LOGGING can always be toggled at runtime when in DEBUG mode (Ctrl, Ctrl, Shift, Shift).
            This flag automatically activates logging on page load.

Once you enable this and restart server. Then open Alfresco in Firefox and login as admin.You will be able to see the extra menu in the header called as “Debug Menu“.

Then Open Web Console and refresh the page. You will be able to see following type of entries in your Web Console of Firefox. These are nothing but logger entries from various log statements added in to the out of box widget javascript code.

If you click on the hyperlink which is visible on the right side of each log statement it will open up related javascript file for you based on which you could trace down the flow and all related details.

You could also see the logger statement in the left side which has widget and function details related to the log. We will be exploring more on various options available through this debug menu in upcoming post,So keep following this one.

  1. You don’t really need to change share-custom-config and restart share.
    It’s also possible to enable debug by enabling a custom module using http://:/share/page/modules/deploy
    Enable the “Debug Enabler Extension” and you have it.
    Also, if you are using your server in debug mode, you can do the same thing in order to disable the debug mode without restarting it.
    Enable the “Debug Disabler Extension”.

    I hope you find this information useful
